Procrastination Isn't a Personal Flaw. It's a Management Disease.

An astronaut trainer's rule for the ISS — act while a problem is still small — reframes procrastination as a leadership failure, not an individual one. On a space station it's lethal. In a company it's 'only' expensive. For now.

Sometimes the insight lands when you least expect it. This one came from Laura Winterling 🚀, a former astronaut trainer.

I used to think of procrastination as a private weakness — the habit of a few managers who keep saying, “I’ll deal with it tomorrow.” I was wrong.

On the ISS, “tomorrow” doesn’t exist

On the International Space Station there is no spare-parts order. No extra tool. No second delivery. If you wait until a problem is big before you touch it, you have already run out of options. All that is left is the emergency.

So the rule in space is simple: act when the challenge appears, not when it has grown. While there is still time, there are scenarios. Choices. Room to manoeuvre. Later, there is only one solution left — and it is rarely the best one.

The reframe

That was the aha-moment. Procrastination is not the weakness of individuals. It is a management disease — the organisational inability to pick up a topic while it is still small, while it can still be cured with simple means.

The problem is not that we decide too late. The problem is that we let our options be taken away, one by one, until only a single one remains.

On the ISS, that is life-threatening. In a company it is “only” expensive. For now.

And then a second animal came to mind 🙈

The ostrich. Head in the sand.

Procrastination says: “I’ll do it tomorrow.” The ostrich says: “I don’t see it.” Two different excuses, one identical result — the options are gone before anyone looks. More on that in the next piece.

So here is the question worth sitting with: which topic in your organisation is still small right now — and quietly waiting?

Thank you, Laura Winterling, for the shift in perspective. I am taking it back to the team.
